I was able to deploy the blink LED example from the Windows 8 laptop to a RPi running Ubuntu. That worked out fairly well.
It is not clear to me how that deployment gets reactivated if I power off and power on the RPi.
So if I develop a control system and package it on the RPi, and ship it to a user, how does the user fire up the control system?

Well done, thanks for your message!
When you buy a licence, your algorithm starts automatically on power-up. In 2-hour DEMO mode, you have to start the algorithm manually. Hope this clears things up.

Thanks. What is the best mechanism to restart the algorithm manually? Restart the machine?

When you restart the machine without a licence the RexCore process will be running but without active executive loaded. You can connect with RexView and you will be asked:

It is enough to restart RexCore:
sudo /etc/init.d/rexcore restart
or
sudo service rexcore restart
Still it is necessary to start the algorithm manually, either from RexDraw or RexView.
